Empowering Teams: The Unexpected Strength of Multiple Leaders

When considering the driving force behind a successful business, one might think of numbers – revenue, market share, or perhaps the size of the team. However, there’s another vital aspect that can make a tremendous difference:

Ownership.

The question then arises – what brings stronger results: a team of five owners or a team of one?

Understanding the power of cultivating leadership at all levels is fundamental to unlocking your organization’s true potential.

Imagine a scenario where you have a team of five individuals, all of whom act as if they are owners of the company. They’re engaged, motivated, and deeply invested in your business’s success. Each decision, each action, is weighed with consideration, knowing that the consequences reflect not just on a personal level but the organization as a whole.

Now, contrast that with a scenario where only one individual in the team – possibly the team leader or the business owner – acts as the owner. The rest of the team might be engaged to an extent, but without the sense of ownership, their level of commitment and motivation is unlikely to match that of the leader.’

The difference is clear. A team of ‘owners’ brings with it a collective force where creativity, innovation, and problem-solving are multiplied. The synergy created by multiple minds, all equally invested in the success of the business, is unmatched.

How, then, as a leader, do you foster this culture of ownership among your team members?

First, it’s vital to communicate the bigger picture. When your team understands the mission and vision of the company, they can align their objectives accordingly. This alignment breeds a sense of purpose that is integral to cultivating ownership.

And, it’s important to consider how you are communicating that bigger picture and the strategy at-hand. Is it a show and tell, or are you including teams in the creation and implementation of the strategy? How are you connecting your teams to the strategy?  Remember: ownership is aligned to contribution and involvement.

Next, empower your team. Provide them with the tools and autonomy to make decisions. Trust their judgment. When individuals feel empowered, they take on responsibilities with a sense of pride and ownership.

Encourage collaboration and value each team member’s input. When individuals see that their contribution is valued and can make a difference, they are more likely to step up as ‘owners’ within the team.

Now, imagine if this approach is not just limited to your immediate team but is embraced throughout the organization. The impact could be revolutionary.
